The study by Helena Merk that asks participants to install an Android app called "Echo" from their website. This is a residential proxy scheme, not research. Per Lurk Research's own FAQ, the app routes their traffic through your device and home IP so their social media scraping looks like it comes from your location. It turns participants into proxy exit nodes, which contradicts Prolific's own ban on VPN/proxy use. It also requires sideloading an unvetted APK and disabling Android security. They market audience targeting by political lean to outside orgs, like ICE, so participants have no idea what their IP is used for, and any activity traces back to their own connection
