The purpose of this project is to learn more about how people judge debates on challenging topics. We hope that having a better understanding of this will allow AI developers to better develop 'scalable oversight' techniques that allow us to be more justifiably confident in AI systems' answers to challenging questions, and which could reduce certain risks associated with the development and deployment of AI systems. If you agree to take part, you will be asked to answer some initial questions. The questions about your level of education, as well as your level of experience with physics and computer programming, are required. You may answer "prefer not to say" to any of the other "details about yourself" questions, although we appreciate your answers where you are happy to provide them. You will then be asked to analyse a debate; you will receive more specific details when you reach this part of the study. Note that we expect that the question being debated may be challenging, and we do not necessarily expect or require you to reach the correct conclusion. We are more interested in getting a clear sense of how you reason about the problem. We expect the study to take approximately 75 minutes to complete, and you will be paid for your time at the amount specified on the Prolific invitation you responded to.

Excellent study. The instructions were clear and very easy to follow. Despite it being around an hour in duration, it was very enjoyable and I was paid a few hours after completing. I hope this researcher pops up on my feed in the future.

Very clear instructions and well written study that pays a strong rate of £25/hour for the one-hour study. Took a bit less than an hour to complete and I felt engaged throughout the process and got an interesting topic.
